Are you living for success or faithfulness?

Jan 7

Meeting a new neighbor, being introduced to a group of people, sitting at a church function, making small talk checking out at the store, drinking coffee in the local cafe and nearly anywhere else we meet someone new the question comes around, “What do you do?”  Ironically enough, that question triggers the “worthiness” power switch among men and women equally. Soon a bullet list resume’ of titles and degrees commences: Masters, Phd, President, Author, Director, Teacher…with no shortage of acclimates as if we need to outdo what possibly could be looming inside the listener’s or overhearer’s back pocket of successes.

It never dawned on my great grandmother, or  grandmother, or even my own mom (though she was  a special kind of strong, well founded woman), to think their equality as a human to any other person was based on what she did instead of who she was. Then, being a woman was never looked down on by any other (wait for it) woman!  The feminist movement over the past few decades is, sadly, one of equality in doing instead of in being.  By the same hand,  women were shamed to be content with who they were.  It wasn’t enough for women to decry equality with man for the simple fact both are created in the image of God. Instead,  they championed a cause fighting for the right to do and receive all things equally.   The yearning for societal approval and acceptance has pioneered both  women’s rights and the inquietude of being the invaluable women for which we are divinely created.  Once upon a time life was about our being not our doing.  I thing it’s time to get back to being. No need for a padded resume’.  Living life faithfully, instead of what the worlds deems as successfully, should be our focussed goal. Is there success outside of faithfulness? No.  The sorority of feminism  cannot offer us more than God’s best for us. And God’s best for us isn’t dependent on the wisdom of the world.  No power, no strength, no efficiency, wealth, nor right-fighting army will ever satisfy us to our core. Only God and His word can do that.  If you’re tired of trying so hard, try changing your focus; what, who, are you striving for?

So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.  Zechariah 4:6

Lord my God, forgive me for looking to the things who world promises will build me up: wealth, power, education, work successes, and teach me to know you more.  Thank You for Your Word, use it in my life to lead me in Your ways. Lord, I want only to be the woman who loves You  and the one You have purposed for my life.

The Twins: Grace and Truth

Sin and Grace
More than my sin, God’s grace.

My girlfriend called me soon after leaving her obstetrician’s  office. Maybe she had a lot more to say, but in the moment  all I heard was, twins. My response echoed every other one she’d heard the previous couple of hours, “Are you serious?”

Twins, in every way we are fascinated with them.  We watch twins carefully. We study their behaviors. We are amazed at the continuum  of unity which they carry through their lives. Studies have shown, even when separated from birth, when reunited in adulthood each twin easily testifies to their truth of somehow knowing their twin all their life. How is it that two people can spend their upbringing a world apart yet still resonate a unity indissoluble?  They’re identical no matter how far apart they are because they were both developed from and  share a  single origination point, but their live’s are unfulfilled as twins unless and until they are brought together. And what a wonderful, beautiful reunion it is.

There are twins in the Bible, too. The same is true of them: born from a single originator, uniquely individual yet inseparable in design, and perfected together.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

If we’re not careful we will separate these twins: grace and truth.  Google grace and you will have more quotes and quips than you can read in a day.  It’s not the same for truth, yet they’re twins for a reason.  If you’re a mom, you want your children to learn to be graceful.   If you’re alive, you want to receive grace from each of your relationships. But grace isn’t needed unless there’s first truth. Think about it; when did you last hope for-or receive- grace from your husband, your boss, your banker?  After you messed up, right?  First comes the hard truth,  and truth doesn’t sit as easily as grace, does it? Truth isn’t fun to talk about. Truth isn’t decorated up for social media oooo’s and ahhh’s.   When do we want to teach our children about grace?  We teach them what grace is and how it looks in their lives either after they choose poorly and the ill-effects of that choice looms, or when they find themselves the unwilling recipient of someone else’s wrong choice and they want to react in an ungodly way.

2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Gal 3:3 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men

Because we are sinners, grace is. Because Jesus is love, grace is. Because Jesus took the truth of our sin to the cross of calvary for us, we have opportunity to take the truth of our sin and meet Him at the cross. (Romans 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!) There we receive His perfect grace. Our sin. His sacrifice. There is no grace without truth.

Truth & Grace; watch carefully, where you see grace, you’ll first have to see truth. When you see truth, God’s beautiful Grace overwhelms!

In just a couple months I’ll leave mid-50’s behind and steam ahead to 60 years of life, should the Lord allow. I’ve been Queen recipient of Grace in my life because, as the truth is, I’ve messed up more times than I could count, but God’s grace…incredible, grace, has been there for me every time. Even in the consequences I so deserve to live out, and at times the pain of my own sin is heavy-but right-still, His Grace overwhelms me. Jesus offers every one of us that same Grace. Do you need it today?

John 1:15-17 John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’” 16. From His fullness we have all received GRACE upon GRACE. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Dear Lord my God, what more is there?  Your grace washes me and covers the truth of my sin as I turn to You. Please forgive me, Lord. Thank you for grace, grace, God’s grace.  Thank  you, for awakening me to Your truth and the truth of who I am as a sinner and who I am as your beloved daughter. Your grace, Lord, how could it be? I’m so humbled at the knowledge  and reception of Your grace in my life. Praise You, Lord. I love You.  Grace that is greater than all my sin.

But God is Light

Jan 6

My feet dug into the Gulf of Mexico’s white powdery sand as my husband and sat hand in hand  waiting  for the sunset. Total contentment.  I’m a lover of the beach, of my husband and the Lord, and this moment was a little piece of heaven on earth.  We talked about nothing and everything. We watched pelicans dine and  people play. We listened to the waves fold into the shore playing chimes with the seashells. We watched Creator God paint the quickly changing horizon. Reclining back for a minute in my  beach chair, I looked up where the sky was bluer than the sea. There, wispy  white clouds outlined a heart and, as if I was alone on this beach, it seemed the Lord had Brush-stroked it just for me. Still denying any others around me, I watched as the heart soon dissipated. Even in the brightness of pre-dawn, the subtle sun rays   promised  quite a show tonight. As if God Himself shone down from heaven, we’ve always been enamored by the radiance of a sunbeam. Today the sky was bursting with them and I was doing the same waiting  anxiously for my husband to notice. I couldn’t wait to enjoy them together. Soon their presence would be undeniable.   The sun  dropped lower as the sky grew darker, and just like the world counting down to this New Year’s Day only hours ago, 3-2-1 the brightness of the light shone through. My husband’s reaction did not disappoint. God was near.  Now, the great  mass of a darkened ocean, coastline as far as the eye could see, unbounded sea shells and sand all performed under the sky’s grandest light show.  Highlighting every reflection of light, the Lord shone through.

The world is a dark, broken place. Sin rages and evil is rampant.  But God is light. You and I won’t get through this year without knowing the pain of sin; look for the light even if it’s hard to see at first, because God is there. His light is beautiful and pure.  Sometimes the light of the Lord is  shines over our life wrapping us in the warmth of  His glory and love, and it feels so good. Yet there  are times when the same light illuminates our own sin like the sun glaring through a dirty windshield as we drive toward the sun. Clean up the sin, and keep moving toward the Son.  In eternity, there will be no sin and there will be no darkness. For now we can look inward and keep our hearts clean before the Lord and we can look outward in a dark world knowing God is light and if we watch expectantly  for Him we will see Him.

I John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Heavenly Father, Creator God, your work is more than beautiful. I am in awe to see a glimpse of what Your hand continues to do. Lord, thank You for Your light, and that You ARE light.

Fear & Peace, Peace & Fear

My creative, humorous, fifth grade student was the daughter of two blind parents who had just brought in an unsuspecting  Aunt to help. Taking advantage of a sighted person to share her life with she wasted no time. When dinner came around, it was the aunt who reached into the freezer for ice cubes. The whole room startled at the sound of her scream. Little Miss had filled the ice trays with what appeared to be real spiders, and her aunts greatest fear!

Spiders, heights, snakes, flying, feeling trapped, public speaking, do any of those evoke a shudder through your body? If so, you’re among good company as Americans share in those common fears.  We are a fearful people.

I was barely 12 when my grandfather died and though I didn’t know it then, it would be just the beginning of so many losses that would come steadily along life’s journey. As an adult I have to realize death is  an expected part of this fallen world, but it never gets easier.

Maybe because the pain is so great, maybe because I’m flesh and bones, or maybe because the evil one knows my soft point, but I sure do fear losing my family. The fear is understandable at first glance, however most often my fears are contrived in my own imagination.   They interrupt a quiet moment, a peaceful sleep, a dinner out, a laughter filled celebration and private conversations of which they have no interest. They steal joy. They crush hope.  They lie.  Yet my thoughts so easily beset right where they linger. I don’t think I’m alone there, am I?

Thank the Lord none of us have to make peace with our fears, real or imagined. No, we can be delivered from them, all of them, every single one. Then, peace overflows where fears once pervaded.

Psalm 34:4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Oh, God, You are ever so loving and powerful. I come to You and ask for You to be near to me.  I need You. Lord, forgive my wandering mind and fill my thoughts with Yours. Lord, deliver me from all my fears and return to me the joy of my salvation. I am Yours, Lord, fill me and love me, use me to share your goodness with all around me.  Overflow from my heart the truth of Your salvation. Amen

Curls. Control. Conciliation.

Jan 4

I can remember Mom shaping my curly, damp hair around her finger one section at a time.  Most  of my life I struggled with the all or nothing trait. Longfellow must have had me in mind.

There was a little girl

BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

There was a little girl,

            Who had a little curl,

Right in the middle of her forehead.

            When she was good,

            She was very good indeed,

But when she was bad she was horrid.

Time hasn’t tamed my fervor, God’s grace working in my life has. I still find myself procrastinating on what’s necessary or hyper focussing  on things less urgent at times (and my hair is still curly),  but for the most part God has shown me the importance of walking in the Spirit moment by moment. If I’m following  closely to Him,  I will effectively be protected from the weakness of myself and any sin that so easily suffocates me with the desire to do versus to be.

Ephesians 5:20 …always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rather than being in control myself, a quick peek at my planner and to-do list will manifest the urge to all or nothing, when I’m allowing the Lord to control my days, time, heart, I am free to just BE in Christ, to walk in the Spirit.  The litmus test for knowing whose path I’m trodding is easy. When it’s my own, I vaccilate between  stress and elation depending on how well I’m executing my plans. When it’s the Holy Spirit I’m walking with, I allow God to search and purify my heart. Walking with the Lord is freeing from all or nothing as  I am filled with peace, and thanksgiving. My heart sings praises to the Lord and my words flow with thanksgiving.

Abba Father, I praise You for all You are in my life. Thank you, Lord, for Jesus. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, chastising and grace. Thank You for mercies new every morning. Thank You for another day to know You and share You with my family and friends. I am undeserving but so very blessed.

He calmed the storm to a

whisper, and the waves of the

sea were hushed.
