In the presence of God

Shepherds. There they were out in their fields tending to the sheep. We should remember their job wasn’t a disposable one. Jesus’ birth was on the horizon just now, and sacrifices of unblemished lambs were made regularly-all to change-but for them, their job was a serious one: take care of the sheep. Tonight, the declaration from the angel was one to take notice of, and one to take action toward.

15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

Luke 2:15-18

JUST AS THEY’D HEARD

The Angels were right! Like Mary in a similar greeting prior and making haste to her cousin’s house, these shepherd men dusted off their fear and in a hurry headed to find this baby they’d been told of. They travel until they got to the manger in Bethlehem and saw the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes lying there. Just as they’d heard from the angels.

GO TELL IN ON THE MOUNTAIN

Well, not too sure their fields or Bethlehem were on the mountain, but what I am sure of according to Scripture is these shepherds made haste following the angels news, found the babe just as they’d told them, and made it their business to tell everyone! the Bible says, “And ALL they that heard it wonderedat those things told to them by the shepherds.” (Luke 2:18)

wondered: properly, wonder at, be amazed (marvel), i.e. astonished out of one’s sensesawestruck, “wondering very greatly” (Souter); to cause “wonder; . . . to regard with amazement, and with a suggestion of beginning to speculate on the matter”
